Content: A holistic approach for planning and conducting the development of bioprocesses is presented. The contents span the definition of markets and goals to project planning as well as matching product requirements with expression system properties and include upstream production, downstream processing and scale-up. A special focus is placed on descriptive and mechanistic models that facilitate the rapid identification of optimal process conditions, thereby reducing the necessary experimental efforts and time.
Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences): The students
- understand which aspects are important for the design of bioprocesses
- can describe the steps involved in process development
- know instruments for carrying out systematic process development
- know the phases of a bioprocess development activity
- know which options exist for improving product formation
- know how to select unit operations for a given process and expected scale
- are able to outline the advantages and drawback of modeling tools for bioprocess development
- can discuss the benefits and drawbacks of screening methods
