Content

1. Application of bedload formulas including preparation of input data (grain size analysis, calculation of hydraulics); analyses of the sensitivity of bedload to changes in river width, slope and grain size.
2. Application of tools for calculating lateral (riverbank) erosion considering geotechnical stability and sediment erodibility
3. Estimating the developing river morphology based on various methods (including assessment of the bed-forming discharge); analysing sensitivity to changes in river width, slope and grain size.
4. Sediment budgeting based on geometric data
5. Applications of gained knowledge to a river section requiring restoration

Previous knowledge expected

Attendance of the course Sediment regime and river morphology (LAWI301286) is recommended.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The students are able to identify the causes of problems in the sediment regime and in the morphological development of rivers, find the appropriate solution and select suitable measures to solve the problem. The students learn about the dependency of river morphology on sediment input and lateral constraints and its reaction to changing conditions (channel width, slope and sediment supply). In addition, the students will be able to calculate sediment transport and estimate the developing river morphology using various methods. The course provides a basic understanding of this current topic and teaches the associated skills.
