Content

This lecture is aimed at students who have completed the module ‘Ingenieurbiologie für UIW’ and wish to specialise in the field of engineering biology.
The course is structured as a project and gives students their first opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in the field of soil and water bioengineering in a practical setting.

The course is run by IBLB (Working Group Soil and WATer Bioengineering). The aim is to apply the various materials used (auxiliary materials and living plants as building materials) in accordance with the objectives of an soil and water bio engineering problem and to implement them in a planned manner. The lecture ‘Ingenieurbiologie für UIW’ serves as theoretical input and a foundation for the course. It is structured around a preliminary discussion, a joint development of the soil and water bioengineering project and appropriate methodology, a field trip, an individual project development phase and a joint final presentation.

Previous knowledge expected

This course is designed to provide in-depth study in the field of engineering biology as part of the UIW Bachelor’s degree. A prerequisite is the lecture ‘Ingenieurbiologie für UIW.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

By undertaking a project in lecture, students will acquire the following knowledge:

- the materials and their applications in the field of soil and water bioenginneering,
- typical problems encountered in the soil and water bioengineering fields of earthworks and hydraulic engineering
- Differentiation in the application of soil and water bioengineering measures with regard to erosion control and ecological improvement
- the design process as a planning tool in soil and water bioengineering
- The life cycle phases of soil bioengineering systems and the associated working methods, in order to be able to carry out planning and considering construction processes, as well as their subsequent maintenance, in a professional manner.
- Decision-making criteria for selecting suitable soil and water bioengineering construction methods
- Development of initial soil and water bioengineering design examples
