The destination for this academic year’s spatial planning field trip is Italy, with a focus on Rome and Naples.

Planned key topics:
Rome: urban planning and open space planning, urban redevelopment, urban renewal, history and development trends; a visit to Sapienza University and the FAO,
Naples: urban planning, Pompeii and/or Herculaneum,
further key topics are yet to be finalised.

The programme will be structured to follow up lectures with guided tours of specific planning examples, so that theoretical concepts can be compared with their practical implementation.

Fixed dates: 9 to 14 May 2027

For organisational reasons, the preparatory meeting will take place as early as October 2026.

Previous knowledge expected

Although passing the course “Planning Theory and Planning Methodology” (LAWI100085) and “Tools and Methods of Spatial and Landscape Planning” (LAWI100095) cannot be made compulsory, it is necessary for understanding the content of the field trip and is therefore considered a prerequisite for taking part in the field trip. Successful completion of the course “Spatial Planning Project” (LAWI100100) is recommended.
Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Goal of the excursion is the introduction and critcal reflexion of different planning systems and examples of implementation in respect to a sustainable spatial development on national and international level. By receiving a broad range of information students should gain insight into the complexity of concrete planning operations and their implementation.
