Content

The course introduces methods and applications of computer-aided modeling and simulation in environmental and engineering sciences. Following an introduction to fundamental modeling strategies, numerical methods, and simulation techniques, students work on interdisciplinary project assignments. The topics are supervised by faculty members from different disciplines and integrate approaches from environmental and engineering sciences, including structural engineering, water resources engineering, natural hazard modeling, and related fields. The course focuses on the development of appropriate modeling approaches, the implementation of simulations, the interpretation of results, and the scientific documentation and presentation of the developed solutions.

Previous knowledge expected

Basic knowledge of mathematics, statistics, and numerical methods is required, together with fundamental subject-specific knowledge in environmental or engineering sciences. Students are expected to have some experience with computer-aided computational methods and an interest in interdisciplinary problem solving. Familiarity with scientific methods and data analysis is advantageous.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

• select and apply appropriate modeling and simulation approaches for complex problems in environmental and engineering sciences;

• analyze scientific and engineering problems systematically and translate them into computational models;

• perform numerical simulations, critically interpret results, and evaluate their validity and limitations;

• develop interdisciplinary solutions by integrating perspectives from different scientific and engineering disciplines;

• document scientific findings in written form and communicate results effectively through oral presentations;

• work collaboratively in project teams and independently review and evaluate scientific literature.
