Citizen science is being used more and more frequently across a wide range of disciplines. Many ecological projects, in which citizen scientists collect data on the occurrence or distribution of organisms, are well known, but researchers in the humanities and social sciences are also increasingly turning to citizen science. In this public seminar, we offer students and interested individuals from outside BOKU the opportunity to learn about current projects through presentations by the respective project leaders and to exchange ideas with them. These presentations take place four times per semester and are preceded by an introduction to citizen science at the start of the semester. This seminar primarily covers projects from German-speaking countries.
Students will learn about the diversity of the citizen science approach, gain an insight into current research and citizen science projects, and in doing so will not only learn how different citizen science projects work, but also what pitfalls to avoid.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

1. Participants can describe how the citizen science method works and can give examples of projects.
2. Participants can identify the different ways in which citizen scientists are involved in the projects presented and classify them into citizen science categories.
3. Participants can formulate their own critical questions about the projects.
