Content

BOKU-degree-holders in the spatially oriented fields should have a basic knowledge of remote sensing. It is not easy today to maintain an overview of the wide variety of geodata (especially remotely sensed data) and to be able to properly appraise the usefulness and the value of spatial data products. This course provides such an overview.

The theoretical lectures introduce geometrical, physical and methodical fundamentals of remote sensing (satellite image analysis, laserscanning, photogrammetry).

In the practical part, example projects are used to demonstrate the possible applications of various remote sensing data and evaluation methods. Practical part: Homework assignments and lecture hall sessions.

Previous knowledge expected

It is recommended to attend the course 857.104 Geoinformatik beforehand.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Students will be able to:
• recall geometrical and physical fundamentals of remote sensing
• recall basic principles of capturing satellite imagery
• recall the principles for creating orthophotos
• know methods for automatically analysing satellite imagery
• identify the practical use of various remote sensing data
• list data sources of satellite images, aerial photos and orthophotos
• distinguish basic land cover types in satellite images and orthophotos
• can independently conduct projects for analyzing remote sensing data in R
• employ image classification for making land cover maps
