Content

• Concepts of root systems, root traits, and rhizosphere functioning.
• Fundamental physical, chemical, and biological processes in the rhizosphere and their interactions.
• The role of root and rhizosphere processes in sustainable agriculture and environmental technologies:
- Rhizosphere management approaches for enhancing nutrient use efficiency and supporting pollutant remediation.
- The relevance of root and rhizosphere traits for plant adaptation, productivity, and crop breeding.
• Current research and applications of root and rhizosphere science in sustainable land-use systems.

Previous knowledge expected

Basic knowledge in soil and plant sciences (at least bachelor level).

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

• Recall important root traits and fundamental concepts of the rhizosphere
• Appreciate and understand fundamental chemical, physical and biological features / processes of the rhizosphere
• Recall and connect important rhizosphere processes to the functioning of soils as well as soil/crop management approaches in the context of sustainable agriculture, soil protection, and soil remediation
• Critically discuss how rhizosphere features can be translated into real world / practice
