This course covers the fundamental structural differences found in wood, cambial growth, cell wall anatomy and chemical wood composition. Key quality characteristics of wood are evaluated alongside the measurement methods and research challenges used to determine these properties. The natural variability of wood properties is analyzed in direct relation to environmental shifts, climate change and forest dynamics. Raw material characteristics are connected directly to the performance, suitability and processing of various wood-based materials; addressing the circularity, recycling, and cascading use of wood and fiber resources.
Please note: the first two sessions will serve as review units, specifically tailored for non-wood technologists.
