After successful completion of the course, students will know the most important theories about the origin and description of vegetation. They have an overview of the geological history of vegetation and the vegetation zones of the earth. They understand the relationships between the physical environment at a given location and vegetation and the processes of biotic interaction and succession after natural and anthropogenic disturbances, which enables them to recognize the effects of human activities on vegetation. They know the most important superordinate units of Austrias potential natural vegetation but also their anthropogenic substitute societies, such as agricultural vegetation types. They know about the endangerment of the vegetation of traditionally used agricultural land by abandonment of use on the one hand and intensification on the other hand by means of concrete examples.
