This course explores the art and science of landscape architectural design across multiple scales.
A successful project is distinguished by its design quality at every level of scale, from the concept to the detail.
As part of the course, students work in teams to develop a design idea (e.g. for a competition), create a draft plan and refine it into an implementation plan including a cost estimate. Care is taken to maintain the context-related design qualities from the idea and concept down to the details.
The topic is to design a temporary garden for an international garden festival.
Finally the designs will be submitted to one of two international garden festivals, where they will be evaluated by a jury.
In case of winning and successfully delivered executable plans on time, the garden will be shown at the festivals in 2027.
Participating Garden Festivals and Themes:
22th Festival Internacional de Jardins in Ponte de Lima, Portugal 2027: "Smart Gardens"
17th Festival de Xardins in Allariz, Galicia, Spain 2026: "Color in the Garden"
