Topic 2026/27 – Obersiebenbrunn:
As part of the course ‘Design and Construction Planning’, students develop a realistic design concept for the centre of the market town of Obersiebenbrunn. The starting points are the refurbishment of the town hall and primary school, as well as an existing transport plan drawn up by the Province of Lower Austria.
The historically evolved system of open spaces, the forecourt of the municipal office and the access route to the primary school are being examined and reimagined. The aim is to create a town centre that fosters a sense of identity and is adapted to traffic and climate conditions, fulfilling both everyday functions and the qualities of a contemporary meeting place offering a high quality of stay. The students will undertake the entire planning process, from analysis through preliminary design and concept design to detailed solutions ready for implementation, including site grading and infrastructure aspects.
The designs should produce several variants aimed at the functional and aesthetic enhancement of the centre, measures for climate adaptation, and the strengthening of identity and the townscape. The focus is on the clear organisation of traffic flows, enhanced road safety for schoolchildren and an improved quality of stay for all users.
Particular emphasis is placed on practical feasibility: the modular concept is intended to serve as a sound basis for decision-making by the local authority and to be structured in such a way that individual measures can be implemented step by step, with a high proportion of work carried out in-house by the local authority’s works department and local businesses.
The course is being run in collaboration with the market town of Obersiebenbrunn and the Schönbrunn Horticultural College.

WORKSHOP: We will begin the course with a workshop, which requires two full days of attendance: Thursday 1 October 2026 and Friday 2 October 2026 (with overnight accommodation on site)
Please take the heavy workload into account when planning your semester!
The course simulates a real-life project situation. From the initial contact through to the preliminary cost estimate, all stages will be worked through as they would be in a landscape architecture practice (albeit with slightly more guidance).
The results will also be presented at an intermediate stage and upon completion, and will be reviewed by external experts.

Design skills and knowledge ist requested such as landscape architectural design and theory, urban planning , implementation planning, presentation, technical and planting knowledge;
