This course provides advanced knowledge in the field of structural reliability and its applications in engineering. The course focuses on probabilistic models for the representation of uncertainties, reliability analysis methods, simulation techniques, and risk-based as well as reliability-based design approaches.
Furthermore, modern methods for assessing the safety, serviceability, and robustness of structures under uncertain loads and material properties are presented. Through case studies and numerical examples, the theoretical foundations are explored in depth and their practical application in engineering is demonstrated.
- Previous knowledge expected
-
Basic knowledge of engineering mechanics, structural analysis and/or structural mechanics, as well as mathematics and statistics is required. In particular, students are expected to have a sound understanding of probability theory, numerical methods, and structural analysis. Familiarity with engineering modeling techniques and computer-aided computational methods is advantageous.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
Identify uncertainties in engineering systems and model them using probabilistic approaches.
Apply methods of structural reliability analysis and critically evaluate their results.
Select and implement appropriate simulation and analysis techniques for estimating probabilities of failure.
Perform safety and risk assessments of structures subjected to uncertain loads and environmental conditions.
Apply reliability-based design and optimization methods to practical engineering problems.
Assess the assumptions and limitations of different reliability methods and discuss their suitability for specific applications.
Understand, critically evaluate, and apply current research findings in the field of structural reliability to their own engineering problems.
