The course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of light and fluorescence microscopy, including optics and image formation, resolution and contrast mechanisms, confocal microscopy, live-cell microscopy, sample preparation, basics of digital image analysis, sources of error, and quality control. In addition, the course covers the design of meaningful experiments using fixed and live samples. Practical exercises in microscopy and image analysis complement the theoretical content and include common analysis methods such as scientific image presentation, artifact removal, colocalization analysis, and image segmentation.

Basic knowledge of cell biology is recommended but not mandatory. The course is particularly intended for Master’s students with an interest in microscopy as well as PhD students planning to acquire microscopic images for their research projects.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

By the end of the course, students will understand the fundamental principles and applications of microscopy in the life sciences and will be able to operate brightfield and fluorescence microscopes using standard procedures. They will be capable of selecting appropriate microscopy techniques, designing experiments with suitable controls, critically interpreting results, and identifying common artifacts. In practical exercises, students will plan and perform a complete imaging experiment, including sample preparation, image acquisition, and analysis. They will implement a reproducible image analysis pipeline and document their work according to the principles of good scientific practice.
