The focus of the guest seminar will be on the science and technology of dissolving cellulose and spinning regenerated cellulosic fibers. Students will examine swelling/dissolution fundamentals, solution characterization and rheology, and industrial spinning routes (viscose, Lyocell, and emerging alternatives). Market context and fiber-performance relationships are integrated to connect lab principles to commercial textiles.
Overview of the topics:
1.Cellulose swelling and dissolution
2.Cellulose solution rheology / characterization of cellulose solutions
3.Overview of the textile market and characteristics of textile fibers
4.Natural cellulosic fibers
5.Viscose process
6.Lyocell process
7.Alternative cellulose spinning processes
8.Group work on presentations
9.Group presentations
- Previous knowledge expected
-
Knowledge in the field of natural resources and their valorization; basics in organic chemistry and related analytical techniques; basics in polymer dissolution and rheology
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
After the course the students will know various cellulose solvent systems and their use in cellulose processing. They will have a basic understanding of the rheology of cellulose solvents and how to measure it. They will be able to identify natural cellulosic textile fibers and understand the fundamental differences between the viscose and the Lyocell process (man-made cellulosic fibers). Moreover, an outlook on emerging cellulose processing technologies will be given.
