New at BOKU: Institute for Development Research (IDR)

BOKU strengthens research for development by establishing the Institute for Development Research at the Department for Sustainable Agricultural Systems

Considering its commitment to sustainable development, BOKU has integrated research for development in various disciplines for many years. Ten years ago, this commitment was institutionalized as the Centre for Development Research. To successfully continue this work, the Institute for Development Research (IDR) has been established at the Department of Sustainable Agricultural Systems.

The Institute for Development Research (IDR) conducts research and provides education on the sustainable use of natural resources mainly in the Global South, guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Key areas are system analysis and modelling, food and nutrition security, and learning in development processes.

The unique CDR partner community at BOKU - scientists who engage in research for development in the Global South - will be continued as the Cluster for Development Research.

The IDR also coordinates the activities of Austrian universities on SDG2 (Zero Hunger) for the UniNEtZ project. Since fall 2019, the IDR has been responsible for establishing the Austria-Africa UniNet, an initiative to strengthen collaboration between Austrian and African scientific institutions

A position for a full professorship “Development Research” has been opened and applications are currently in the assessment process.

We look forward to the new challenges - get in touch
