GBS and AEMS Summer Universities 2021 closed with success

The summer universities “Green.Building.Solutions. (GBS)” and “Alternative Economic and Monetary Systems (AEMS)” have once again been held in an online-format and closed with 81 students from 41 countries last weekend!
This was not only a positive result in terms of increased participants numbers – GBS hosted 46 participants, the AEMS has 35 graduates this year - but also concerning the heart-warming feedback by the students who found those programs as a life-changing and excellent summer experience!

Luis Laglera is Guest Professor at the Department of Chemistry from May 17 – 28, 2021
Luis Laglera is Marine Scientist and Professor at the Department of Chemistry at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). He is a member of the group FI-TRACE (Flow Injection and Trace Analysis) at UIB and his research interests are focused on the study of the biogeochemical cycles of trace metals in ocean, coastal and estuarine waters (with emphasis in iron, copper, lead, cobalt and mercury), and in particular in the characterization and quantification of natural organic ligands.

Guest professor: Stephen V. Evans
Professor Stephen V. Evans of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at the University of Victoria will present the lecture course Advances in Protein Crystallography in the summer term 2021 in a digital format (LV 773010). The BOKU textbook "Riverine ecosystem management - Science for Governing Towards a Sustainable Future", published three years ago by Springer as Open Access, achieved more than 500 000 downloads by March 2021.
"Greening the Gas" put to the test
Researchers from the Vienna University of Technology and the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences will lecture and discuss 'Greening the Gas put to the test' on March 23, 2021. Lectures on 'Green Gas in the Natural Gas Grid' and the 'Underground Sun Conversion' will be followed by considerations from energy system planning and energy space planning perspectives.

Research on lignin and biorefineries on the cover of "ChemSusChem"
BOKU researchers from the Institute of Chemistry of Renewable Resources discuss recent trends in lignin utilization and resulting biorefinery concepts in an article that was ranked as a "very important paper" and also made it to the cover of the journal "ChemSusChem". The results come from a long-standing collaboration with research groups in Finland and Canada.

The high interest in the 6th Symposium of the International Society for River Science, which was held at BOKU in September 2019, has finally resulted in the release of two special issues, containing numerous high-quality publications from all over the world. The sound of rivers - a trigger for riverine biota?

The world is facing critical challenges, from climate change to the overuse of natural resources and the loss of natural habitats. Societies will need to undergo important transformations to become more sustainable. Leading these transformations requires a better understanding of nature-society interactions, as well as innovative ideas to apply scientific knowledge. This lecture series, offered by young scholars working at the Institute for Social Ecology, will reveal cutting edge results from the field of social ecology, and provide reflections and solutions on how this knowledge can contribute to a more sustainable society.
Dechema research scholarship to investigate cell-free therapies
Cell based products from patient-specific cells can stimulate regenerative processes within the body without eliciting the risk of cellular malignancies. The 31st annual conference of the Austrian Society of Agricultural Economics with the topic “Strategies for the agricultural and food sector and rural areas in times of multiple crises” takes place from 16th to 17th September 2021 at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria.
Every second year ÖGA issues a call for the ÖGA Award. Young researchers are asked to submit their theses. To be considered for the ÖGA Award the theses must be written in one of the focus areas of ÖGA and have some relation to Austria.

Understanding the formation of nitrous oxide emissions
An interdisciplinary team of scientists from the University of Innsbruck, BOKU and University of Vienna has succeeded in studying emissions of the greenhouse gas N2O under the influence of environmental impacts in an unprecedented level of detail. The study, which has now been published in Science Advances, is thus also a starting point for anticipating future trends in the greenhouse gas emission dynamics of ecosystems under global climate change.

"Soft" Cellulose Nanospheres for Next-Generation Immunosensors
BOKU researchers have developed functional, "soft" cellulose-based nanoparticles in cooperation with research groups from Germany, Finland and Canada. These particles have an extraordinarily high protein sorption capability and could increase the sensitivity of antigen tests in the future.
