Presentation and poster Prize at ISEKI e-Conference

Carola Bücher and Lucija Podrzaj, two PhD students from the Institute of Food Science, Department of Food Science and technology, were awarded presentation and poster Prizes at the 4th ISEKI e-Conference on “Food Texture, Quality, Safety and Biosecurity in the Global Bioeconomy”.

The 4th ISEKI e-conference “Food Texture, Quality, Safety and Biosecurity in the Global Bioeconomy” was held remotely in November, 10-12, 2021. Oral and poster presentations at the e-conference described scientific research being conducted by undergraduate students, graduate, and PhD students from all over the world.

Lucija Podrzaj received the 2nd poster Prize for her poster entitled "Comparative analysis of Clostridium tyrobutyricum genomes reveals high genetic diversity". Her poster showed results of the genomic comparison of several strains belonging to the species C. tyrobutyricum, which is recognized as the main causative agent of late blowing defect of cheese. This research provides a deeper insight into diversity of C. tyrobutyricum and increased the knowledge of the impact of this bacterial species on cheese quality. Her work is supervised by Dr. Johanna Burtscher and Univ.Prof. Dr. Konrad Domig.

Carola Bücher was awarded with the 2nd prize in the category “student presentations” for her work with the title “Optimization of the identification of dairy propionic acid bacteria using mass spectrometry”. The presentation dealt with beneficial and deleterious effects of dairy propionic acid bacteria for cheese production and potential improvement in their detection using MALDI-TOF MS and was supervised by Dr. Johanna Burtscher and Univ.Prof. Dr. Konrad Domig. The work of Carola Bücher is financed by the COMET-K1 competence centre for Feed and Food Quality, Safety and Innovation (FFoQSI). The program COMET is handled by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG.
