Baumschabl wins PhD Award

In his work, he succeeded in optimizing the autotrophic strain Komagataella phaffii, which uses CO₂ as its sole carbon source. His optimized strain produces up to 600 mg/L lactic acid from CO₂.

Particularly noteworthy is the discovery of a natural recycling pathway for the toxic by-product 2-phosphoglycolate by deleting the CYB2 gene. This could significantly increase the efficiency of CO₂ utilization.

Michael Baumschabl's research has the potential to have a lasting impact on biotechnology and provide important impetus for future developments in CO₂ utilization.
