Two BOKU researchers among the world's “Highly Cited Researchers”

According to the current publication analysis “Highly Cited Researchers 2024”, which Clarivate Analytics publishes annually, Helmut Haberl and Karlheinz Erb can count themselves among the world's most cited scientists.

This year's list of “Highly Cited Researchers” published by the data company Clarivate includes a total of 6,636 researchers from 59 countries. According to the annual analysis, they make up the top one percent of the most frequently cited scientists. In addition to the number of publications in specialist journals, the scientific relevance of the work is primarily measured by how often a paper has been cited by other colleagues. The current list includes 45 researchers working (at least partially) in Austria, compared to 41 in the previous year.

USA continues to lead, but loses share - China catches up

The USA continues to lead the list of the world's most cited scientists: A total of 2,507 “Highly Cited Researchers” come from the United States, which corresponds to a share of 36.4 percent. However, there was a decline compared to 2018, when the share was 43.3%. China, on the other hand, recorded a significant increase: with 1,405 researchers on the list, the country achieved a share of 20.4% and more than doubled this compared to 2018.

The USA and China are followed by the UK with 563 “Highly Cited Researchers”, Germany (332), Australia (313) and Canada (206). The Netherlands (185), Hong Kong (134, excluding mainland China), France (126) and Singapore (108) complete the top ten.

Among the 45 “Highly Cited Researchers” working in Austria are Helmut Haberl and Karlheinz Erb, both from the Institute of Social Ecology at BOKU. With their interdisciplinary work in the “Cross-Field” category, they have a strong influence on several scientific fields, according to Clarivate.

Congratulations to them!
