Zechmeister-Boltenstern honoured

The Head of the Institute of Soil Research has received a prestigious award from the City of Vienna.

Sophie Zechmeister-Boltenstern was one of the main winners of the City of Vienna's award for outstanding achievements in culture and science. The head of the Institute of Soil Research received the award, which is worth 10,000 euros, in the mathematics, information technology, natural sciences and technology category. "The biologist's internationally recognised research into soil microbiology and the analysis of the carbon and nitrogen balance of soils is fundamental. Through her media publications, this dedicated educator, one of the most frequently cited scientists worldwide, is helping to raise awareness of soil and soil protection issues," the jury stated.

'At a time when the achievements of the Enlightenment, science, cultural diversity and freedom are under increasing pressure, it is important to recognise those who uphold these ideals of modern democracies in their work. After all, they act as role models who inspire and encourage us to continue working together towards an open and diverse future,' emphasised Veronica Kaup-Hasler, Vienna City Councillor for Culture.

The City of Vienna prizes, each endowed with €10,000, have been awarded annually since 1947 for exceptional contributions in architecture, fine arts, media art, literature, journalism, music, popular education, and science (since 2014, the Media Art Prize). These prizes honour the previous work of the award recipients. Sponsorship prizes, each endowed with 5,000 euros are also awarded.
