Prof. Thomas Rosenau (Institute of Chemistry of Renewable Resources) was awarded an honorary doctorate (Dr. honoris causa) of Aalto University (Helsinki/Espoo, Finland) during the Ceremonial Conferment of Doctoral Degrees. Participants, wearing traditional Finnish academic attire, are presented with their doctoral certificates and ceremonial doctoral hats. The honorary doctorate is the highest academic distinction awarded by the Finnish university and is conferred upon individuals who have rendered outstanding service to the scientific community and the university through their scientific achievements, scholarly work and long-standing collaboration. Particularly in the fields of green chemistry, biorefineries, and novel biomaterials, Aalto University is regarded as one of the world’s leading academic institutions in research and education.

Rosenau is internationally recognized for his contributions to the chemistry of renewable resources. The honorary doctorate certificate states: “In recognition of his leadership in green chemistry and biopolymer research. His research has led to fundamental advances and innovations in cellulose chemistry, fiber technology and lignin utilization, among others. His collaboration with Aalto University has been extensive and strengthened joint high-impact research.”

With this academic distinction, Aalto University also honors Rosenau’s longstanding collaboration with its School of Chemical Engineering. This includes joint projects and publications, activities as a reviewer and examiner, research visits, and his many years of service as Chair of the school’s Scientific Advisory Board. The honorary doctorate therefore recognizes both the scientific achievements and the contribution to international cooperation in the field of chemistry of renewable resources and biomaterials.
