Poster prize for Nikolaus Twaroch at the biorefinery conference RRB 2026

Nikolaus Twaroch was awarded a poster prize during the conference dinner of RRB 2026 – the International Conference on Renewable Resources & Biorefineries – held in Leuven, Belgium, on 2 June 2026.

The research presented in his poster, “Exploring Esterification with Imidazole Derivatives for Green Modification of Wood,” introduces a versatile approach to more sustainable chemical wood modification. The method enables a range of functional groups to be introduced into wood-based materials, creating new opportunities to tailor their properties to different applications.

The work was carried out within the SusFoMa project, “Sustainable Transformation of Food By-Products into Processable Materials.” The project explores how agricultural by-products and residues from food processing can be converted into processable, bio-based materials using environmentally friendly chemical methods. It is funded by the Gesellschaft für Forschungsförderung Niederösterreich.

Nikolaus Twaroch is conducting his doctoral research under the supervision of Marco Beaumont and Thomas Rosenau.

The award recognises his contribution to the development of sustainable wood-based materials and highlights the considerable potential of renewable resources for future material applications.
