UH 066 449 Master programme Environmental Science - Soil, Water, Biodiversity (ENVEURO)

Brief description

EnvEuro is a two-year double-degree Master's programme in Environmental Science offered jointly by four leading European universities.

EnvEuro is a two-year double-degree Master’s programme in Environmental Science offered jointly by four leading European universities. The programme focuses on critical themes such as soil, water, and biodiversity, reflecting Europe's long history of natural resource use and the lessons learnt from environmental mismanagement.

Given Europe's commitment to addressing environmental deterioration and ecosystem vulnerability, the EnvEuro programme stands at the forefront of environmental research and practice. It emphasises the intricate relationships between natural resource use and their effects on both the environment and society. Through this programme, students gain valuable insights into European ecosystems and the principles guiding current environmental management efforts.

All students will start up with a common introduction to European environmental practises including legislation, regulation, monitoring/data collection and policy as well as other courses fundamental to Environmental Science. Students can then choose from five specialisations: Water Resources, Soil Resources and Land Use, Ecosystems and Biodiversity, Environmental Management, and Climate Change. The flexibility of the programme allows students to combine any two specialisations or focus solely on one, tailoring their education to their interests and career goals.

Throughout their studies, students will learn essential analytical and management tools as well as innovative technologies aimed at promoting sustainable production systems and responsible natural resource use. By participating in the EnvEuro programme, students are well-prepared to tackle complex environmental challenges and contribute meaningfully to the field of environmental science.

Compared to a national MSc programme, a joint European master in Environmental Science brings together a broader range of complementary expertises ensuring high educational quality in a multi-cultural, -economic and -political environment. This will foster intercultural understanding and break down barriers in future European cooperation.

The MSc is offered by four partner universities. The four current partner universities comprise:

  • BOKU University, Vienna, Austria
  • UHOH - University of Hohenheim, Germany
  • SLU - Swedish University of Agricultural Science, Sweden
  • WUR - Wageningen University, The Netherlands
  • (UCPH - University of Copenhagen, Denmark - admission only until 2024/25)

Structure of the Master's programme

The full programme comprises 120 ECTS and consists of 4 semester packages each with a work load of 30 ECTS (basic semester package/BSP, two advanced semester packages/ASPs and a Master's thesis). During the MSc programme, all students will be studying at two different partner universities.  The students  will be registered at the university chosen to start at, which in the programme is called the “home university” (1st year). For the 2nd year, the students have to move and register at another partner university, which is called the “host university” where additional courses are taken and the Master's thesis is conducted.

This study programme is only taught in English.

Admission to the Master's Programme

The admission to the Master's programme is a joint admission handled by the EnvEuro committee (application deadline: non-EU: January 15, application deadline EU: April 15).
Details on application and admission procedure can be found on www.enveuro.eu

Applicants should have a first university degree equivalent to a European bachelor degree in Natural Science with documented completion of courses comprising natural resources/earth sciences/environmental sciences and at least two of the disciplines: physics/chemistry, biology/ecology, mathematics/statistics. The degree must be obtained at an institution which is officially acknowledged by the countries of home and host university. The final grade has to be above average as defined by the home and host university.

Career prospects

EnvEuro graduates qualify for environmental careers in private companies and the public sector related to:

  • Analysis, monitoring and modelling
  • Environmental technology
  • Environmental regulation, planning and control
  • Impact assessment and risk analysis
  • Research and education

Environmental careers are offered in the environmental departments of industries, environmental technology companies, consulting firms (agriculture, engineering), public administration from local to national and international levels, environmental laboratories, universities and other research institutions, and in developing agencies.
