Admission into Master's programmes with international educational background

Admission to Master's programmes is conditional upon the successful completion of a relevant Bachelor's programme or an equivalent degree programme at a recognized Austrian or foreign post-secondary institution.

A different but related field of studies at an equivalent level of higher education may require additional courses, which must be completed by the end of the second semester of the Master's programme.

Admission at BOKU University allows for a maximum of 30 ECTS of additional courses.

Please include the following original documents (or certified copies) with your application:

  1. Completed application form
  2. Evidence of previous studies (bachelor´s degree, diploma)
  3. Transcript of records stating subjects, marks, ECTS
  4. Contents of teaching* (e.g. module handbook) as PDF or link
  5. CV
  6. Evidence of adequate proficiency in English (for English-taught Master´s programmes)**
  7. Evidence of adequate proficiency in German A2 or C1 (for German-taught Master´s programmes)

*All documents to be considered for admission must be included with the application. The subsequent submission of additional achievements or courses will not be taken into account. It is in the applicant´s interest to submit a module handbook (or officia course descriptions) to potentially reduce the number of prescribed courses.

**From January, 1st, 2026, the new guideline for proof of English language proficiency in the context of admission to degree programmes will come into force:

For degree programmes that require proof of English proficiency, applicants must demonstrate English language skills at level B2–C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) as part of their application.

The following documents are accepted:

• TOEFL iBT (incl. Home Edition) – minimum score 95 points

An official confirmation that the entire course of study has been completed in English must be submitted with the stamp and signature of the educational institution. Proof of English-language courses, exchange semesters or study visits to an English-speaking country is not sufficient.

Certified copies can only be accepted if they include either the original legalisation confirmation from the Austrian Embassy or an Apostille.

Additional copies of the required documents need to be submitted.

*As part of the review of the submitted documents, the university reserves the right to request additional documents or evidence if deemed necessary to verify the admission requirements. The assessment will be conducted in accordance with the principles of free evaluation of evidence pursuant to Sections 45 and 46 of the General Administrative Procedure Act (AVG).
