Microbial cell factories fight back?

Microbial production systems for biopharmaceuticals have been displaced by mammalian systems in recent years, mainly due to increased demand for antibody-based products. In most other categories, microbes have maintained their dominant position in biomanufacturing. The authors of the recent publication at IMMB demonstrate that through significant improvements around glycosylation and secretion of proteins, as well as around understanding the cellular processes antibody mimetics are promising biotherapeutics that are likely to restore demand for microbial biopharmaceutical production platforms.

ISSY36, Vancouver

GSA Poster Prize for Marina Ječmenica
At the 36th International Specialized Symposium on Yeasts (ISSY36), Vancouver (Canada), BOKU- BioToP/acib PhD student Marina Ječmenica won one of the poster prizes sponsored by the Genetics Society of America (GSA). With her contribution "Komagataella phaffii: QTL mapping for strain development" she convinced the international participants of this conference. Congratulations!

Livestock microbiome studies

Collaboration of the Institute of Food Science (Dept. Food Science and Technology) and the Institute of Computational Biology (Dept. Biotechnology) resulted in two papers published in PeerJ and Frontiers in Microbiology dealing with RNA extraction methods and antibiotic resistance in livestock gut microbiota. Thanks to BIOMIN and FFoQSI.

Hundreds of beet genomes sequenced

The latest work of the Institute of Computational Biology now published in Nature Communications! Phylogenetic analysis based on 606 genomes of wild and cultivated beets provides insight regarding beet domestication, taxonomy, and disease resistance.

Komagataella yeasts characterized by genome sequencing and growth tests

A study on genotypic and phenotypic diversity of Komagataella species was published in Microbial Cell Factories as a collaboration of the Institute of Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology, the Institute of Computational Biology (both DBT, BOKU), and others.

DBT - Department of Biotechnology - is one of the leading biotechnology research institutions in Europe focusing on synergistic interaction of cell engineering, process engineering and resulting products. Based on molecular and systems biology research we are developing cell based bioprocesses. These include all biotechnologically relevant pro- and eukaryotic organisms. Our strength is based on an interactive network of our researchers and scientists active in various fields of biotechnology, ranging from genes, to cells, processes and products.

We are part of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), and belong to the Vienna Institute of BioTechnology (VIBT), a cluster of BOKU departments located at Muthgasse, Vienna.
