Vienna Scientific Cluster (VSC)

Vienna Scientific Cluster (VSC) is a cooperation between the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), the University of Vienna (Universität Wien), the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), Graz Technical University (TU Graz) and the University of Innsbruck (Universität Innsbruck). It comprises high performance computing (HPC) clusters for selected scientific projects. The computer systems are located at the Vienna University of Technology (Arsenal) and are operated jointly by the participating universities.

The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna is involved and shares the costs by providing two especially dedicated personnel positions (staff members of BOKU's Information Technology Services, workplace in the VSC team at the Vienna University of Technology).

Detailed information on the computer systems and their use as well as the allocation assistant for project proposals can be found on the VSC's web pages:

Generally, an application via the allocation assistant is required for all project proposals and needs to be approved by the steering committee.

TOP 500 / TOP 100 Processing Power

With a LINKPACK processing power of 35.5 teraflops, VSC-1 reached place 156 in theTOP500 list of the world's most powerful computers in November 2009.

The VSC-2 is even more of a success: With a processing power of 135.6 teraflops, the VSC-2 reached place 56 in the TOP500 list of the world's most powerful computers in June 2011. It is thus among the top 100 computers in the world!

VSC-5

VSC-5 is the latest addition to the Vienna Scientific cluster infrastructure delivered by Megware. The system includes 1,540 AMD EPYC Milan processors and 98,560 cores (more than double the VSC-4) and features a hardware partition of CPU and GPU nodes connected via Mellanox HDR Infiniband adapters (200 Gbit/s bandwidth).
