The annual field days of the "Boden.Leben" association and the "Humus Movement" are central meeting points for innovative farmers, where several hundred practitioners from Austria and Germany are expected. The BOKU research group Boden.Pioniere, an initiative of scientists from the Institutes of Agronomy and Soil Research for Soil Health and Innovative Agriculture, is invited to both events to present their research results on soil health, biodiversity promotion and climate change adaptation.
The approach of using frontier scientific methods to accompany innovative farms in order to explore new solutions for climate-smart soils has met with great interest from farmers, extensionists and authorities. The BOKU research group is showing an effective way of integrating research and agricultural practice as part of the "lighthouse farm strategy" of the EU Mission Soil Health in order to achieve the goal of climate-neutral agriculture as part of the Green Deal. "The exchange of analytical data and published results with the farmers where we carry out our investigations represents a continuous process of mutual learning and further development of ideas to understand and manage the complex soil ecosystem," is the philosophy of the group.
At the field days on June 7th, not only research results will be presented, but also practical methods will be demonstrated how practitioners can carry out an initial diagnosis of soil health in the field. At a "Festival for the Soil" in Germany, members of the BOKU research group will present their experiences with science-practice interaction for solutions to secure soil ecosystem functions in climate change.
