Department of Biotechnology (DBT)

Mission Statement

The Department of Biotechnology is a leading institution for research and education, focusing on:

  • Biotechnology for Health and
  • Biotechnology for a Sustainable Future.

We develop novel concepts and solutions for the well-being of individuals, society and the environment. Our scientific approaches and methodologies include molecular biotechnology, synthetic biology, bioprocess technology, cell biology, bioanalytics, genome-scale data science, mathematical modeling, as well as techno economic evaluations. By interdisciplinary integration of our scientific results we provide solutions with industrial applicability.

We teach undergraduate and graduate students in all fields of biotechnology mainly in the bachelor program Food- and Biotechnology, the master program Biotechnology, and several Doctoral Schools.

  • BioProcesses for native and engineered proteins

  • Systems biotechnology to understand cellular limitations
  • Knowledge driven cell line engineering

Institute of Cell and Tissue Culture Technologies

  • Isolation, characterization, expansion and differentiation of human primary/stem cells for cell-based therapy products
  • Development of physiologic cell culture conditions mimicking the native cellular environment by using advanced culture technologies
  • Culture under physioxic conditions
  • 3D culture systems (scaffold-free and scaffold-based)
  • Culture in dynamic bioreactor systems

Institute of Molecular Biotechnology

  • Molecular biology, strongly connected to bioprocess engineering
  • Design, engineering, and characterization of proteins and nucleotides
  • Expression systems for the production of biopharmaceuticals
  • Expression in mammalian and insect cells, bacteria, plants
