The Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing

Access and utilization of biological material from abroad – what is the Nagoya Protocol and do you have any obligations?

10:00 ‐ 12:00

  • Vortrag

Do you work with biological material from outside Austria and have heard about the Nagoya Protocol or Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) rules?

The Research Support, Innovation & Technology Transfer invites you to an information session about the implications of the Nagoya Protocol for researchers working with biological material from abroad.
If you are doing research with biological material (excluding human DNA) that comes from outside Austria, you need to understand the basics of the Nagoya Protocol and ABS and what are your obligations as a researcher in Austria.

Dr. Scarlett Sett is the ABS compliance officer at Kiel University. She supports researchers in understanding their ABS/NP obligations and guiding them through their ABS processes. In this information event, Dr. Sett will share her expertise with you and give you relevant insights and necessary information to assess whether your research might also have ABS obligations to take into consideration.

During this information event, we will go step by step through what researchers need to know and do to be compliant with any obligations stemming from the Nagoya Protocol and the EU ABS regulation. You will hear about the user checks that have already started in Germany, what are some of the direct consequences for being non-compliant (e.g. fines, embargo of material and publications, etc.), what requirements journals and funding agencies might start asking for and tools and tips already available for you to use and inform yourself. We will also have plenty of time for you to ask questions.
