During the 4-year duration, four so-called 'EcoSites' will be established in variousEuropean regions with different economic, social and ecological structures, namely Spain, Denmark, Greece and Austria. Under the leadership of BOKU, the Austrian EcoSite will be established in the region Tullnerfeld together with Fleischwaren Berger GesmbH, Gemeindeabwasserverband südöstliches Tullnerfeld, Spitzer GesmbH and AAT Abwasser und Abfalltechnik GmbH. The Ecosites focus on the regional energetic use of wastewater and waste as well as the recovery of service water. The technical focus of the project is the development of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor for the treatment of wastewater and slaughterhouse waste from the meat producer Berger. The biogas obtained is utilized in the facilities of the company with the intension to reduce dependence on fossil resources, the purified process water is used as service water and, in addition, fertilizer is generated for regional agriculture. An additional benefit is the significant reduction of the organic load on the local wastewater treatment plant, which is located in a strong growth region. The European Union is providing funding of €12.4 million for the implementation of the overall project.
