- ELLS Scientific Student Conference 2021
19-20 November 2021
online/hybrid, organised by the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW)
369 students registered for this year's Scientific Student Conference of the Euroleague for Life Sciences. The topic "Green (r)evolution: from molecules to ecosystems” was divided into 4 subthemes: molecules, organism, community and ecosystem. The sessions accommodated 38 (BOKU: 7) oral and 57 (BOKU: 8) poster presentations.
The conference was opened by the Rector of SGGW, Prof. Michal Zasada, the ELLS Chair, Prof. Michal Lostak (CZU) and Stella Langthaler, the new chair of the ELLS Students Association (ELSA) from BOKU. The keynote by Assoc. Prof Edyta Zawisza (Institute of Geological Sciences, Polisch Academy of Sciences) “From zooplankton (Cladocera) to lake ecosystem reconstruction” got the participants in the mood for the different student presentations.
The clearly structured conference platform made it easy to move from one session to the next. Scientific discussions during the breaks and an online student party with a concert and dance classes offered many possibilities to get to know the other participants, to network, to get inspired and have fun.
During the final award ceremony excellent ELLS master theses and the graduates of the joint ELLS master programmes were honored.
As every year, the best oral and poster presentations received prize money.
Congratulations to the winners of the Student Presentation Prizes from BOKU!
* Subtheme „Community“: 1st prize oral: Anne-Laure Girard
* Subtheme „Community“: 1st prize poster: Nazli Golestani
* Subtheme „Ecosystem“: 2nd prize oral: Thomas Zankl

- ELLS General Assembly & Forum 2021
"Actions towards a more sustainable future, lesson learned from the crisis"
online/on-site, organised by the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, 18-19 November 2021
78 staff members of all ELLS universities registered for this year's General Assembly & Forum which was held in hybrid form for the first time. The members of the ELLS Board, Task Force, International Relations Officers and ELLS - Students Association (ELSA) were invited to the campus of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences in person. The Subject Areas and other Support Teams joined the conference online.
The keynote introductory lecture was divided into three topics:
- environmental crisis
- demographic/social crises
- educational/communication crisis,
The topics were prepared as TED talks. In the corresponding workshop the participants discussed i.e. about actions towards a more sustainable future, lesson learned from the crisis and the consequent challenges for life science universities and the academic community.
Like every year the General Assembly and Forum also offerd many opportunities to exchange experiences, e.g. during the presentations of the different Subject Areas and Support Teams and the individual group meetings.
During the closing ceremony the organisational team of the first online ELLS Conferences 2020 at BOKU - Kyrill Sattlberger, Mag. Ulrike Piringer and the BOKU representatives of the ELLS Student Association Nora Korp, Sarah Moser and Sarah Sperrer - received the ELLS Award. Congratulations!

ELLS General Assembly & Forum 2020
"Scenarios for the Future: The Impact of Life Sciences on Human Life Quality in the 21st Century"
BOKU, 19.-20. November 2020
From November 19 to 21 BOKU organised the first online edition of the annual network conference of the Euroleague for Life Sciences and the ELLS Scientific Student conference.
More than 500 students and staff member of the different ELLS universities registered for these conferences.
The topic of this year’s General Assembly & Forum was "Scenarios for the Future: The Impact of Life Sciences on Human Life Quality in the 21st Century". After the opening by Rector Hasenauer, Prof. Verena Winiwarter from the Institute of Social Ecology, at BOKU gave an inspiring keynote: "Providing Sustainable Human Well- Being. Why Life Sciences are Key to the Agenda 2030". Three workshops further elaborated the conference theme resp. dealt with the network’s future options in research collaboration. Furthermore, the conference was also used to share experience and knowhow on the adaptations of teaching and administration due to the current COVID-19 situation and to further elaborate the network’s strategic goals.
"The World of Tomorrow – A Green and Sustainable Society" was the topic of the ELLS Scientific Student Conference. In four different subthemes students presented the results of the bachelor or master theses or their first PhD-year. After the keynote by Dr. Simone Gingrich, Institute of Social Ecology, - "Land use and sustainability: lessons from the past and challenges for the future", the Students' Innovation Centre [sic!] organised a panel discussion with BOKU start-ups to demonstrate future career options. In total 36 oral and 41 poster presentations were held at the Scientific Student Conference. The best presentations were awarded the “ELLS Student Presentation Prize”: 8 out of the 21 prizes went to BOKU students or recent graduates – see below.
As far as the conference design is concerned, the organisational team around BOKU-International Relations and the Euroleague Student Association ELSA tried to create a “real conference feeling”: making contacts and networking was a central goal – despite the missing physical encounters. Thus, a conference platform that guides the participants virtually through the BOKU campuses was created. This platform embedded not only the classical zoom meetings, but also integrated the virtual platform “Wonder” for scientific discussion and social exchange: The participants respectively their avatars just moved around the room, approached each other and formed small groups in bubbles, where they discuss in video chats – almost like in real conference breaks.
Already now, we warmly invite all BOKU students and staff members to join the next ELLS conference which will be held from November 18 to 20, 2021 at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (WULS-SGGW). If online, hybrid or as physical edition, still needs to be decided in spring.
