OeAD: Bilaterale Sprachkurse in Form von Sommerkollegs

Urban Planning Summer Course in Iceland from August 8-16 in Reykjavik, application deadline: May 5 / Master's Course Sustainable Urban Planning Charette in Response to a Changing Climate, Sea Level Rise - Mitigation, Management and Planning in Reykjavik

Course Description:
Urban adaptation is an increasingly critical area of examination in light of emerging environmental challenges. Discussing mitigation and urban design solutions to cope with the consequences of climate change. The aim of the charrette is to provide students with hands-on experience on the challenges that Reykjavík is facing in regards to sea level rise. The AUI charrette deals with an architectural, planning or urban design problem of civic importance, led by a design professional, working on a selected problem. The goal of the process is to put forth feasible and creative solutions to real problems for actual clients, as opposed to solving theoretical or academic problems.

Through collaborative sessions the students draft a solution to an urban design and planning problem. In order to solve the problem, the students need to use multi-disciplinary tasks. The AUI charrette takes place in multiple sessions in which the group is divided into sub-groups. Each sub-group then presents its work to the full group as material for future dialogue. In this way the students learn to quickly generate a design solution while integrating the aptitudes and interests of a diverse group of people. At the conclusion of the charrette the team turns its proposed solution in to the jury of the planning competition which finally presents it to large audience of planning professionals, business and civic leaders as well as faculty members and students.

The students will work out drafts and proposals for a changing planning approach with regards to rising sea level. Scope of the project is the metropolitan area of Reykjavík, zooming in downtown Reykjavík. Applicability for other Nordic cities will be taken into consideration.

The course is of 6 ECTS and is organized by Dr. Sigríður Kristjánsdóttir, Agricultural University of Iceland.
Application deadline: May 5, 2019.
