About the project:

The UVG 2.0 research project focused on green facades as a progressive link between food, water, and energy supply, with the aim of using them as a valuable element in cities of the future. Dense urban areas in particular benefit from green facades with their diverse ecosystem services (e.g., cooling the air temperature, passive flood protection, bioenergy, food production, biodiversity, noise reduction).

In order to explore the potential of vertical greenery on buildings, the Urban Vertical Green 2.0 consortium worked with local stakeholders in three cities (Berlin, Vienna, and Ljubljana) to examine aspects relating to the construction, administration, and management of urban green structures. Using a transdisciplinary and participatory approach, conventional greening and maintenance options were rethought and optimized with knowledge from the fields of urban planning, landscape architecture, ecohydrology, mechanical engineering, urban water management, and economics in order to bring, implement, and use more nature-based solutions in urban spaces in the future. The project was supported by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency and JPI Urban Europe.

The Institute of Soil-Bioengineering and Landscape Construction and the Institute of Sanitary Engineering and Water Pollution Control are focusing their efforts on the joint development of a drip hose-free irrigation concept that enables grey water or rainwater to be used in vertical greening. Vertical greening can serve as a purification stage for grey water, or grey water can be used as a drinking water-saving resource for irrigation.
