Content

In this combined lecture series and seminar, students are given an overview of different approaches to key topics and strategies in the field of sustainable resource use. The course offers scientific perspectives from current research at the Institute for Social Ecology and other research institutions in Vienna as well as insights into applied aspects of sustainable resource use and resource policy. Among others, the following topics are addressed in the VS:
•Social metabolism
•Patterns and trends in global resource use
•Circular economy
•Urban mining
•Biomass resources / bioeconomy
•Energy systems and energy system transformation
•Cities and sustainable use of resources
•Policies and strategies for sustainable use of resources

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After the successful completion of the course
•the students gained an overview of different approaches to and topics of sustainable resource use.
•they know major strategies of sustainable resource use and are able to discuss them critically from a social-ecological perspective.
•the students gained fundamental insights into the inter- and transdisciplinary challenges in the context of a more sustainable metabolism of society.
