Content

Introduction: special characteristics of agricultural production; farm business management - purpose and methods; the history of farm business management. The farm as production unit: forms of business organisation in agriculture; agricultural enterprise structures; production factors (goods, services, legal rights). Cost estimating: full costing; direct or marginal costing; internal charges; capital budgeting. Enterprise planning and development: linear programming; programme planning; investment analysis (partial capital budgeting). Comparisons between enterprises: classification of agricultural enterprises; horizontal and vertical comparisons; comparison of enterprises in Austrian agriculture (national agricultural statistics). The economics of crop production: purpose; use of the land; general issues of plant production economics; specific issues of plant production economics. The economics of animal production: purpose; classification; key factors determining the type and scale of production; enterprise structures; general issues of animal production economics; specific issues of animal production economics.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Students should become familiar with the special characteristics of agricultural production. They should understand and be able to use the various methods available for supporting decision-making on the farm. They should also be aware of the importance of each such decision in terms of the economic implications for selected branches of production. Finally, the students should understand how net results are dependent on interactions between different decisions and their outcomes.
