Content

- Introduction (GIS in riverscape planning, GIS databases in Austria/EU, data aquisition, eg.)
- GIS for environmental monitoring in riverscapes (Concepts/tasks in monitoring, data availability, shortcomings, examples, GIS instruments and tools)
- GIS application in stream protection and river restoration (Concepts/tasks, data availability, shortcomings, examples, GIS tools)
- Rivers as network (network geometrie, network analyst tools)
- GIS and modelling (data processing (environmental data, human pressures, land use,...) on different scales, modelling of eg reference conditions (prediction of fish assemblage under undisturbed conditions))

Previous knowledge expected

autonomous working with ArcGIS!!!!
--> basic GIS knowledge (Introductory course); e.g. structure of GIS data, data import, editing, coordinate systems, transformations

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After successful completion of this module, participants will be able to:
- Identify and structure work flows in GIS
- Examine potential data sources for GIS analyses in aquatic ecology
- Apply GIS tools suitable for monitoring, management, planning, and analyses of riverine ecosystems and create GIS maps
- Interpretation of GIS results for riverscape analyses
