Overconsumption, resource depletion, overpopulation, environmental degradation – the current problems are vast and well known. But rather than just adding another discussion of the current state of the world, Alternative Economic and Monetary Systems. The economy of the future aims to offer solutions and provides the opportunity to link theoretical approaches with subject-specific content from different scientific disciplines and work experience from professionals. Lectures, workshops and discussion panels explore the intricate interactions of "society" and "economy" and examine these topics:

(1) The variety of alternative economic and monetary systems that are already in practice worldwide and show promising long-term perspectives for the reorganization of our economy.
(2) Ecologic sustainability: Options for the long-term management of natural resources, new consumption models and resource cycles, energy management and environmental protection.
(3) The need for a new philosophy: Business ethics, corporate social responsibility and consumerism, solidarity and the common good – what needs to change in order to reduce or reverse the current problems of society and environment?

AEMS Vienna 2014 is part of the Vienna Business Dialogues, a cooperation bringing together universities, companies and organizations to develop new strategies for a sustainable economy. Current members of this cooperation are the Vienna University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), the University of Vienna, the Vienna University of Technology, the Vienna University of Economics and Business, the movement Economy for the Common Good and the OeAD-Housing Office.
Previous knowledge expected

Interest in current day-to-day politics and questions of economic, ecological and social sustainability.
Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Develop an understanding for
-alternative economic and monetary systems (current state-of-art in theory as well as practical approaches and current implementations)
-ecologic sustainability and resource management (link between economic models and the provision of natural resources)
-economic and environmental ethics (macro- and meso-level approaches as well as individual ethics)
