Content

Protection against natural hazards is provided by active or passive or permanent or temporary measures. These measures always have ecological effects in addition to the primary protection goal. These ecological aspects are at the centre of this course, in which the term ecology is discussed in the context of hydraulic engineering measures and a wide range of "ecological natural hazard topics" is covered. The main focus of the course is to get to know legal requirements in the context of the EU, federal and provincial levels, regulations and funding instruments as well as their practical application. Furthermore, the stakeholders of the Austrian administrative practice dealing with ecological aspects in hydraulic engineering are presented on the basis of their roles, tasks and interests.
The aim of this course is to use the ecological potential in dealing with measures in hydraulic engineering. Areas of tension but also synergy effects of ecology and hydraulic engineering are shown, methods for analysis and planning instruments are presented.

Previous knowledge expected

fundamentals in the knowledge of natural hazards processes
knowledge about the natural hazards management

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The students have the required knowledge of ecological aspects in nautral hazards engineering and the necessary skills to name and analyse the area of conflict between ecology and engineering. They have knowledge of the ecological potential of natural hazards management measures.
