This course builds on the VU "Gewässerkunde und Hydrometrie (816100)" in the 2. Semester. Main processes of the hydrological cycle such as precipitation, runoff and evaporation will be covered and introduced more on their phyical and thermodynamical principles. In addition, we cover important statisitical and mathematics that are relevant to area of flood risk managment (extreme value statistics), interpolation of hydrological variables and parameters (nearest neighbor, linear, spline, kriging), correlation and regression analysis as well as simple rainfall-runoff modell concepts.

- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
After finishing this course successfully, students should ...
- have extended knowledge about the processes of the hydrological cycle, about measurement techniques and their advantages and disadvantages and how to mathematically describe these processes.
- know the fundamental principles of extreme value statistics;
- should be able to use extreme value statistics to derive extreme flood events;
- know interpolation methods, as well as their assumptions and limitations;
- be able to chose the right interpolation method and estimate e.g. precipitation at unknown locations;
- know concept of correlation and regression analyis;
- know the princicples of simple rainfall-runoff (unit hydrograph) and routing methods;
