The course consists of two parts: a theoretical Part 1 (lectures) and a practical Part 2 (tutorial).
Part I:
1. Introduce the physics and mathematics of boundary value problems (BVPs) in geotechnical engineering;
2. Mesh-based continuous numerical methods: finite element method (FEM) and finite difference method (FDM);
3. Meshless continuous numerical method: smoothed particle hydrodynamics;
4. Discrete method: discrete element method.
Part II:
1. Simple calculations by hand using numerical approaches;
2. Practical simulations with software including FE-calculations (settlement, stability, bearing capacity, seepage);
3. Use of software like GEOSLOPE, FLAC3D etc;
4. Numerical example to gain hand-on experience.

Expected results:
1. Understanding of the common numerical approaches such as FEM and FDM;
2. Basic understanding of the frontiers of numerical modeling such as meshless methods and DEM;
3. Get familiar with common commercial geotechnical software;
4. Gain hands-on experiences with numerical simulations of typical geotechnical problems.
