This lecture deals with the basic mechanisms of the physiology of microorganisms and pinpoints a link between microbial physiology and biotechnology.

Topics include:
- Fundamentals in microbial physiology
- Major pathways of hexose degradation and cellular energy generation
- Fermentative physiologies
- Anaerobic respiration
- Aerobic chemolithtorophic metabolisms
- Fixation of molecular oxygen
- Anoxygenic photosynthesis

Katabolic pathways are discussed in the context of biotechnologically relevant microorganisms

Previous knowledge expected

general microbiology; biochemistry

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After successful completion of this lecture, students understand the major mechanisms of microbial mechanisms for energy generation and the interconnection with anabolism.

Students are able
… to characterize bacterial metabolic pathways
… to explain biochemical principles governing distinct catabolisms and ATP generation
… to assess the physiological capacities of selected microorganisms of biomedical and biotechnological relevance
… compare energetic outputs of bacteria in aerobic and anaerobic environments

Students are familiar with strategies for exploitation of microbial physiological mechanisms in the fields of biotechnology and biomedicine.
