Content

The course content consists of in-depth topics in the field of plant use with regard to design and planting planning. The perception of green and a planning and horticultural mediation by individual presentation methods are general focal points. Against the background of current contexts on plant use (trends, climate-adapted concepts, care-technical innovations, terms, etc.), the annually changing projects are classified and specific expert inputs are introduced. The following topics are used optionally and in different forms in project-based teaching: perennial production; special crops such as grasses and ferns, bulbs and tubers, summer flowers, warm climate plants; contemporary practical examples of different planting concepts; perception, presentation and communication of greenery and plants.
The current climate development faces us with new challenges in landscape architecture. In the city, but also in rural settlement structures, it is necessary to increasingly unseal areas and establish more greenery. Existing green structures must also be adapted - in terms of location and functional values in settlement areas. Against this background, the thematic arc of the course opens up: it is about the perception of vegetation, plant growth according to ecological contexts and the transformation into an open space planning design context.
Last year we "looked" with particular interest at the plant in the city; this year's theme focuses on the plant in the cultural landscape. We sharpen our view on the plant in open landscapes and use it to develop implementation scenarios for horticultural and design use in an urban context.
The perception of vegetation happens especially through an artistic examination and the creation of individual approaches to plants and their environment. For this purpose we go into the landscape and express our experiences artistically. With planning and design methods, the results from the creative process are transformed and expressed in a concrete place. This approach can also provide the population with incentives for sensual perception and appreciation of green - an essential prerequisite for the long-term qualitative use and preservation of green in our immediate living environment.
Theme 2022 "Look at the plant in the landscape".
In terms of perception, it is about the artistic examination of plants in the landscape, the individual representation and mediation of the process. In the run-up to the plant design, the following plant-use-related questions generally arise:
- what functional properties do plants develop in particular locations and in horticulturally relevant open spaces?
- which site- and design-related functional values can be derived from the observations and how can they be integrated practically - in terms of garden design - into everyday life?
- which planting concepts are suitable for the use of climate and site specialists under which special development and maintenance measures?
