In this course, students will learn and practice theories and methods to critically analyse current public debates about organic farming and sustainable food systems transformation.
Throughout this course, students will gain an extensive understanding about the main debates and actors involved in organic agriculture and food systems, they will discuss the problematic on the “conventionalization of organic” debate, and make use of critical discourse analysis tools to explore the use of language as socially shaped and socially constitutive, unravelling the ideological and power dimensions embedded in diverse texts, and how these dimensions may affect the possibilities of agricultural transformations.

Previous knowledge expected

Familiarity with organic farming and food systems is beneficial.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

By the end of the course, students will:
-have gained an overview of the main current debates and actors involved in organic agriculture and food systems
-be familiar with the different ways in which language, as a form of social practice, is embedded in ideological and power relations
-be able to critically analyse different texts from diverse actors of the organic food and agriculture sector
-be able to recognise the diverse power dimensions that affect public debates about organic farming and sustainable food systems transformation
