Content

In this course students will discover the captivating world of atmospheric and climate dynamics in a virtual laboratory. The course provides theoretical background and hands-on experience regarding quantitative and qualitative methods used to model the climate system, diagnose changes in atmospheric and climate dynamics and radiative foricing and illustrate model applications in environmental research. The course is divided into a lecture series focusing on theory and methods and practical exercises using various models, from energy balance models showcasing the role of greenhouse gases and idealized models illustrating large-scale dynamics and climate modes to intermediate-complexity models incorporating oceans and clouds. Thereby the course provides insights into physical processes, atmospheric and climate dynamics and climate model applications and limitations and their use in studying past, present, and future climates. Idealized and intermediate complexity models will be run locally without any need for a supercomputer facility and thereby provide students also for further exploration in their studies within the framework of the course on atmospheric and climate modeling.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

During this course students will obtain theoretical insights in atmospheric and climate physics and learn to apply idealized models and models of various degrees of complexity to achieve a better understanding of the climate system and its changes. Students will obtain hands-on experience in the development, analysis and interpretation of model simulations. After the course students will understand key concepts of physical climate science. Students will be able to perform analyses and diagnoses regarding atmospheric and climate dynamics, apply a suite of qualitative and quantitative methods and to explore processes in modeling frameworks of varying complexity to test scientific hypotheses.
