Content

The basics of photovoltaic systems for commercial buildings are discussed. In particular, the photovoltaic cell (structure, materials used, physical principle, achievable efficiencies, latest developments) and the integration of PV modules into holistic systems (PV modules, assembly on substructure, circuitry, inverters, integration into existing building automation) are discussed.
In addition to the theoretical basics, practical examples of implemented systems in service buildings as well as individual case studies of PV roof systems including evaluation in Europe are presented. Software for planning/design and calculation of PV systems is explained and demonstrated using case studies.

Previous knowledge expected

Basic electrical engineering knowledge.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Students are familiar with the structure of photovoltaic cells and know the basic advantages and disadvantages of PV systems in commercial buildings.
They are able to design and recalculate specific systems when it comes to a new construction or a subsequent installation/expansion to a building. They can evaluate the efficiency of PV systems or analyze the economic operation of PV systems in service buildings.
They are able to work with building planners and operators to design a PV system conceptualize and implement PV systems in service buildings (regarding: planning, design, calculation)
