THE VEGETATION OF URBAN GREEN SPACES USING THE EXAMPLE OF VIENNA DONAUSTADT

In recent years, there has been increasing discussion about how more biodiversity can be brought into the city. Existing and newly created urban green spaces and lawns offer potential for this. For example, the campaign “Nix Mäh Mai” (or “No mo may”) on existing lawns proclaims an increase in biodiversity by reducing maintenance. Local authorities and private green space maintenance companies see an opportunity to offset increased operating costs (energy, labor costs, inflation, etc.).

But what does it mean when a lawn that is cut 10 times a year is switched to mowing twice a year? Which plants and plant communities actually thrive in the city of Vienna and what responsibilities and open space uses are they subject to? Are there connections between open space and vegetation zoning and how can socially oriented open space planning be implemented in green space maintenance?

Due to its extensive green spaces in municipal and cooperative apartment buildings, the closeness to the surrounding agricultural area and new projects related to biodiversity, the “area district” of Donaustadt offers a suitable study area. Using selected examples, we want to get to know the vegetation as an indication of the history of use and maintenance of green spaces in the city. Building on a collaboration with a private property management company in 2023, we want to follow the development of the areas that were not mowed at that time.
