Content

This lab will build on the theoretical content provided in the VS urban climate and environmental meteorology. Focus is given on 1) innovative meteorological and biometeorological measurement techniques to obtain information on urban thermal environments and ambient air quality, 2) modelling techniques to assess changes in thermal environments and/or ambient air quality following anthropogenic activities. Students will work with faculty in small teams and focus on field measurements in chosen districts and locations in Vienna and/or the application of urban energy balance models, flow models, and simplified chemistry-transport models and climate models in order to better understand the physical connections and the resulting meteorological quantities. The application of biometeorological models will allow students to evaluate the quality of thermal comfort in selected study regions.

Previous knowledge expected

none

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After participation students will have gained experience in field measurements and/or modelling techniques relevant to assess thermal comfort and ambient air quality in urban environments.
