This course guides students in interdisciplinary sustainability science through the process of academic writing, from conducting literature research using classical data bases, google scholar and AI-supported tools, to structuring articles, overcoming writer's block and refining storytelling techniques. Through interactive workshops, peer review sessions, and writing days in Vienna, participants will develop effective writing habits, receive individual coaching, and connect with fellow researchers to advance their projects. In the first unit, we will decide on the place and time of writing days in the second half of the term.
- Previous knowledge expected
-
The course is open to all PhD-students (priority is given to those from the doctoral schools DSSE and T2S). Participants fill a questionnaire on their scientific writing project (e.g., an abstract or any other part of a new article, drafting an introductory chapter of their thesis, finalising an article draft…) and expectations before the first unit.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
Upon completion, students demonstrate the ability
- to structure research articles effectively to ensure clarity, coherence, and adherence to academic standards.
- to explain opportunities and limitations of using academic databases, literature management tools and AI-tools to streamline literature review and citation management.
- to apply storytelling techniques in scientific writing to make their research more compelling and accessible.
- to identify strategies to overcome writer’s block and establish an effective writing routine.
- to engage in structured peer review to refine their writing and contribute to a supportive academic community.
