Content

In this course, students will learn about the Austrian waste management policy with a topic-specific outlook on the EU level on the basis of current problems and developments (e.g. Circular Economy guidelines of the EU). In the first units, the main features of waste management policy are presented, case studies are presented, also on the basis of press releases and film material, and questions are worked out and discussed together with the students. Technical, economic, socio-political, legal, social and ethical aspects will be examined.

The knowledge gained will be deepened, applied and consolidated in a business game

ATTENTION: attendance is compulsory!

The following topics and issues will be covered:

- Waste Management and Circular Economy- an environmental and socio-political task? - Introduction and overview

- Waste management policy in Austria and the EU - basics, actors and instruments at a glance

- Costs and Financing of Waste Management - Operational and Economic Basics and Practical Examples

- Is a landfill-free/ zero-waste society achievable? - international efforts to achieve these goals

- Incentive systems to implement waste management and waste policy measures

- Consumption and prevention of specific waste streams (e.g. food waste)

- Reuse and informal sector in waste management

The course will also include a field trip to a waste management relevant organization.

Previous knowledge expected

Basic knowledge of waste management is necessary. It is recommended to have attended a basic lecture on waste management before attending this course, e.g.;Waste Management and Waste Disposal; (813.100); Waste as a Resource (813 103) or adequate LVA of other institutions. Knowledge from the LVAs Waste Logistics and Waste Disposal Technology is also advisable!

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Learning outcomes after successfully completing the course are: ability to realize, understand and critically discuss current problems, processes and economic, political and social aspects in waste management as well as to develop and draft concepts and solution options for future strategies.
